In January 2014, NGOs & residents of Vayots Dzor Region, Armenia, raised concerns about
environmental & health hazards posed by Lydian International’s Amulsar gold mining project. They
were particularly worried about pollution of main water resources with dumps and wastes,
radioactive pollution with uranium and thorium, risks of landslide processes and seismic risks.
In September 2013, some 15,000 people filled the streets of Bucharest, Romania, to protest a draft
law passed by the government designed to approve Europe's largest gold mining project to be
implemented by Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (owned by Gabriel Resources). They contended
that the mine's liberal use of cyanide and heavy metals such as mercury would create a major
environmental risk. The draft law would also permit forced expropriation of land, which would violate
the individual right to property.
