An environmental network raised fears of increased repression by the Aquino government in the wake of the arrest of an anti-mining activist the military insists is a New People’s Army commander.
The Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment aired its concern even as an international watchdog organization tagged the Philippines the third deadliest country in the world, and the most perilous in Asia, for environmental defenders.
In its report, “Deadly Environment,” released mid-April, Global Witness, which “investigates and campaigns to change the system by exposing the economic networks behind conflict, corruption and environmental destruction,” recorded 67 environmentalists murdered in the Philippines between 2002 and 2013, following Brazil with 448, and Honduras with 109.
