MINING BOOM Canadian mine projects pose concerns for fisheries

Vancouver-based Imperial Metals' Red Chris open-pit mine project lies near the headwater lakes of the Iskut River, a major tributary of the Stikine. That project, said Zimmer estimated would produce some 183 million tons of toxic tailings and 307 million tons of waste rock that would likely need to be treated for acid mine drainage in perpetuity.
