Patel was born in Great Britain, so when he shot for his breakout film “Slumdog Millionaire” on location in Mumbai, the experience opened his eyes. He came across families earning their living by e-waste scavenging, car battery breaking and small-scale gold mining, which exposed them and their children to toxins such as lead and mercury.
