Daniel Peplow and Sarah Augustine, a couple who co-founded the Suriname
Indigenous Health Fund are raising awareness of how gold mining resulted
in mercury contamination in many streams and rivers that are the
lifeblood of indigenous people. Native communities in Suriname — the
small, largely jungle country in South America — are now seeing more
birth defects, stillbirths and other deformities.
