How Colombia's illegal gold mines are making life a misery for the people and wrecking the environment

Whole communities are displaced from their homes and chemicals, such as mercury, are simply dumped in the water. Diggers even dredge from floating platforms and destroy the river bed.
Comptroller General Sandra Morelli, an independent economist, warned: “Colombia is on the verge of an environmental collapse without precedence in our history.”
The Record travelled to Latin America with the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) to raise awareness of the charity’s annual Wee Box, Big Change campaign.
