Around 37 gold miners in this municipality were recently identified to pilot the initial health assessment for small scale miners in the province to gauge the extent of their exposure to mercury.
Dr. Judy Lacar of the Department of Health Kalinga, in a statement, said that the samples taken are brought to a laboratory in Japan for examination and assessment. The test she said would measure the toxicity level of mercury among the miners.
This is being conducted in partnership with the Ban Toxics, a non-government organization advocating for the banning of mercury use in gold mines.
