ENVIRONMENTAL
groups are calling for the ratification by the Philippine Senate of an
international treaty that seeks to reduce mercury use and releases
across the globe.
A resolution was
adopted by environmental groups during a general assembly simultaneously
held in Quezon City, Davao City and Cebu City on Friday urging the
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the
Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to work closely with the Philippine
Senate for the treaty’s ratification by the Philippine Senate.
Called Minamata
Convention on Mercury, the treaty was signed by Environment Secretary
Ramon JP Paje in behalf of the Philippine government last year.
So far, 96 other countries have signed the treaty.
