Pantukan gold rush: Boon or bane?

While thousands of small-scale mining companies and individuals rake huge profits, mine workers earn below the minimum wage and the local government feels it is not getting its rightful share in profits. Small-scale mining operations have done very little, or nothing at all, to help improve the lives of the people in host communities.
Worse, the unregulated small-scale mining in Pantukan was blamed for the environmental degradation and tragic deaths of mine workers.
