While thousands of
small-scale mining companies and individuals rake huge profits, mine
workers earn below the minimum wage and the local government feels it is
not getting its rightful share in profits. Small-scale mining
operations have done very little, or nothing at all, to help improve the
lives of the people in host communities.
Worse, the unregulated
small-scale mining in Pantukan was blamed for the environmental
degradation and tragic deaths of mine workers.
