WHILE some mining
companies and individuals have business permits and operate within
Barangay Napnapan’s declared Minahang Bayan, a gold-rich barangay in
Pantukan, small-scale mining in other areas continue illegally, causing
adverse impacts on the environment and exposing the people to serious
health risks.
The situation in
Pantukan reflects the over-all situation in other areas where
small-scale and artisanal gold mining are taking place.....................
Under EO 79, the use of mercury—a toxic heavy metal—is strictly
prohibited. It also provides that small-scale mining should be conducted
in declared Minahang Bayan.
