Environmental concerns: Activists disrupt another international conference to raise domestic issues

While the participants of the conference were discussing responsible mining, the environmental activists showed them on computers the situation at mine tailings depots. They accused the conference of legitimizing “the plunder of Armenia conducted by foreign corporations under the patronage of the Armenian government.”

The environmentalists singled out a number of most controversial cases including plans for gold-mining at Amulsar near the resort town of Jermuk, the development of mines around Teghut and others.

They, in particular, demanded that the conference participants stop the ‘disastrous projects” and that foreign diplomats stop patronizing private mining companies from their countries and putting pressure on the Armenian government in matters concerning the mining sector.
