EMA Director General, Mutsa Chasi told the committee that most of the
country’s water bodies and land have been contaminated by chemicals such
as mercury and cyanide used in illegal mining activities.
Citing
alluvial chrome and gold miners as the chief culprits, the authority
told legislators in the National Assembly that while there are over 20
large scale decommissioned mines in the country which pose a serious
threat to people, animals, water, vegetation and the environment, only
four mines have been rehabilitated at a cost of over US$32 million.
