Rosia Montana (Romania) – 1883 Years of Existence, 15 Years of Resistance

Rosia Montana is a community of sixteen villages located in a district known as the Golden Quadrilateral, in the South Apuseni Mountains of Transylvania in Romania. The surrounding mountains hide 300 tons of gold and silver. Rosia Montana Gold Corporation, a Canadian-Romanian company wants to open a massive open-cast gold mine. They promise state-of-the-art technology and offer locals to be moved into new, modern houses, while their homes would be destroyed.
The rich mineral resources of the area have been exploited since Roman time or earlier. Gabriel Resources of Canada plans to open a new mine. This has caused controversy over the extent to which remains of Roman mining would be preserved and over fears of a repeat of the devastating cyanide pollution at Baia Mare.
The campaign against mining at Rosia Montana is one of the largest campaigns over a non-political cause in the last 20 years in Romania. A plethora of organizations spoke out against the project, from Greenpeace to the Romanian Academy.
