The Peruvian government has approved a widespread ban on illegal mining to rid the country of a practice that can be both hazardous and lead to extensive environmental damage.
The
ban, which was approved by President Ollanta Humala last weekend by
Supreme decree, will see a crackdown on Peru’s US$3 billion dollar
illegal mining trade, which has caused extensive deforestation.
Daniel
Urresti, the high commissioner in charge of issues related to formal
mining in Peru, told news channel Radio Programas del PerĂº that the
government will be carrying out two main investigations related to
illegal mining in the country in 2014.
