Mercury Levels In Small Fish From Seneca Lake Streams
Mercury (Hg) is a naturally occurring element which has become a main
focus in discussions regarding environmental health and pollution. The
main reason mercury is at the forefront of many of these discussions is
the toxicological risk it presents to both humans and animals. Though
historic sites are one type of anthropogenic point source for mercury,
modern industries including mining and combustion of coal, metal
refinement, gold production, cement production, and numerous processes
involving combustion are all sources of mercury to the environment (US
EPA 1997.) Volcanic eruptions and weathering of rocks also provide a
significant mercury input to the environment; however, anthropogenic
sources are proving to be more substantial than those that are natural
over the long term (US EPA 1997.) (January 1, 2014) Happenings: the monthly newsletter of the Finger Lakes Institute [more on Water Quality in our area]
