Mercury contamination in the Amazon Basin

The AmazonBasin encompasses the largest tract of tropical forest on Earth, hosting an unparalleledvariety and abundanceof plant and animal species(UNESCO, 2003).The forested landscape occupies approximately 2,100,000 square miles on the territories of ninestates, most notably Brazil (60%), Peru (13%) and Colombia (10%).Rapid development in this area is promoting unprecedented environmental damage, amounting to an estimated 7.5 trillion dollars every year (UNEP,n. d).Therefore, an increasing number of both terrestrial and aquatic endemic species are becoming vulnerable or threatened, with some being already on the brink of extinction. This essay aims to highlight the most importantdrivers of mercury contamination to rivers and discuss its impactsonvarious speciesof reptiles, fish and freshwater mammals
