Commissioned by the United Nations Environment Programme, this research is one of five case studies
developed to inform governments internationally on the complexities of
"formalizing" artisanal and small-scale mining. The study examined national laws and policy frameworks in place in Tanzania's artisanal and small-scale mining sector, and was published in June 2012. In 2013, more than 140 countries agreed to sign a historic treaty on mercury pollution, the Minamata Convention on Mercury,
which includes explicit attention to small-scale mining. The 5 case
studies commissioned by UNEP contribute to inter-governmental dialogue
on the equity provisions of policies for addressing this sector.
