Blood Red Gold: Mining, Development and Conflict in Peru

To add yet one more factor to an already complex situation, an illicit mining industry exists alongside the governmentally sanctioned industry. With a national poverty rate of over 30%, many desperate individuals are enticed by the get rich quick promises of illegal gold mining. However, illegal mining is often just as damaging to the environment as large-scale projects and the use of mercury in illicit mining activities has poisoned food sources that communities in the surrounding area rely on. Although the government has cracked down on the illicit mining sector, it remains a pervasive issue.
