The report identified active lead mines in these states with soil lead
concentrations ranging from 2,100 ppm to 180,000 ppm and a gold
processing centre with soil lead concentrations as high as 10,000 ppm
and soil mercury concentrations up to 31 ppm. The report added that the
hand-crushing of the ore with mortars and pestles by the people and the
open burning of mercury amalgamation were fast damaging the soil, water
and the environment.
