The top cause is artisanal gold mining. The process includes mixing
earth and water with liquid mercury which binds to even the smallest
particles of gold present into amalgam. The contaminated water is then
discarded into local water sources and the amalgam is heated to burn off
the mercury which then enters the atmosphere. Once the mercury enters
the water supply and atmosphere there is no getting it back. It will
persist for hundreds of years.
