The backlash began on September 1, when Romania’s government, headed by
Prime Minster Victor Ponta, adopted a bill to allow the Canadian
corporation Gabriel Resources to use cyanide mining — despite the
environmental dangers — in the small, resource-rich town of Rosia
Montana. Excavation for the project, which is awaiting parliamentary
approval, would displace several hundred town inhabitants, destroy
ancient Roman ruins and, according to environmental activists, pump
12,000 tons of cyanide into the ground every year.
