Peru signs Minamata Convention on mercury

Policymakers worldwide are taking a step toward controlling dangerous mercury contamination caused by a wide variety of practices and industries. Peru is among the nations that have agreed to and signed the Minamata Convention, an international and legally-binding treaty that will help to curb mercury pollution around the world.
According to a press release from the United Nations Environmental Program, the Minamata Convention will control the use of mercury in consumer and industrial products, as well as in energy production. The press release also states that the convention will take aim at the use of mercury in artisanal gold mining, which could have substantial effects in Peru.
