No less concerning is the massive environmental damage that illegal
gold mining causes. According to recent reports, illegal mining has led
to the extreme mercury contamination of rivers in the Peruvian Amazon, threatening local populations.
Peruvian authorities
have thus far failed to curb the rise of illegal mining operations.
According to Verité’s report, “Many of the mining camps lack a police
presence and authorities lack the resources, and in some cases are
afraid, to visit mines located deep within the dense Amazon jungle or on
protected lands,” which prevents existing laws from being effectively
enforced. Serious changes will have to be made in order to stop these
dangerous practices.
