Nigeria, others sign treaty against mercury pollution

In fulfilment of the desire of groups and individuals for Nigeria to support the international mercury treaty, the country, alongside other countries, has signed the world’s first international mercury treaty.
The treaty will take effect once ratified by 50 countries. The United Nations Environment Programme said it expected this will take about four years.
The treaty was signed in Minamata and Kumamoto, Japan, on Friday, where the country’s Permanent Representative in Nairobi, Mr. Akin Oyateru, led the delegation and signed on behalf of the country.
