Vast amounts of rock and other materials were blasted and removed from
the open mine pit, to uncover the underlying gold and silver. This
method produces up to ten times as much waste rubble as an underground
mine, leaving a vast crater and destroying the environment at the mine.
At the site, cyanide is used to separate precious metals from
non-valuable tailings, leaving toxic waste that is difficult to dispose
of safely.
