A gold mining project in Romania has sparked the biggest street protests since the 1989 revolution.
A
Canadian company wants to mine Europe’s largest gold deposit, located
deep beneath an ancient mountain town, Rosia Montana, and three nearby
mountains. Rosia Montana Gold Corporation says its mining operation
would create thousands of jobs and provide more than two $2 billion in
dividends, royalties and taxes. But more than ten-thousand Romanians
have been marching in the streets on weekends to demonstrate their
opposition.
