Children as young as eight are at risk of injury, mercury poisoning
and sexual harassment because of work in certain Tanzanian gold mines,
according to a recent report.
Human Rights Watch claims young people are working in small-scale
gold mines and exposing themselves to the risk of being crushed in pit
collapses, accidents with tools, breathing dust and getting exposed to
mercury.
In its report, Toxic Coil: Child Labor And Mercury Exposure In
Tanzania’s Small-Scale Gold Mines, the organisation also claims girls
found on and around mining sites can face sexual harassment and even
pressure to engage in sex work.
