Mercury contamination in Peru's Amazon affects indigenous groups

A study released on Monday by the California-based research organization, the Carnegie Institution for Science, has revealed that mercury contamination caused by informal gold mining in the Peruvian region of Madre de Dios has reached alarming levels.
The Associated Press reports scientists tested hair samples from 1,029 people living in 24 communities in Madre de Diós. To their dismay, researchers discovered that 76.5% of people living in the area had mercury levels above acceptable limits in their bodies.
