Small-scale mining activities in Ghana remained unregulated and
therefore the government does not received any revenue from their
operations.
The activities of the small scale miner, however, comes with
implications on the national economy as it has caused financial loss to
the state as well as death in some cases due to the use of chemicals
especially mercury which is used in refining the gold. The chemical has
also caused several health problems in many communities around the
mining areas.
Ironically environmental and mining laws in Ghana have regulated how
miners must treat water before releasing it into receiving water bodies.
One significant thing is that the pollution of the water bodies comes
as a result of the refusal to use the Tailing Storage Facility (TSF) by
the small scale miners.
