Save Milos Island from being polluted by Gold mining

The Greek island of Milos is threatened by Gold mining companies! The facts are these:
1. The economic crisis and high gold prices have led to intensified efforts to start gold mining projects in several European countries, among others in Greece.
2. Gold mining and processing involves destruction of landscapes, land disturbance, erosion, disruption of ecosystems and pollution affecting land, water, animals and people. Gold mining is also responsible for health problems.
3. Gold companies are now trying to start intensive geological research in western Milos where they believe the can extract more than 1 billion dollars value of gold.
4. Western Milos is classified as a high priority Natura 2000 area (GR4220020 Prophet Elias), a high conservation priority, due to its endemic flora and herpetofauna.
5. Given the determination of the Greek government to give priority to mining against the environment, and given the mayor's ambivalent position, a protest movement must develop to stop the project politically in its initial phase. Experience from Northern Greece shows that enormous effort is needed to stop such projects in their later phases. Therefore, immediate action to stop the project is needed now.
