It would be the first precious minerals operation in more than two decades in the historic Ortiz Mine Grant, where gold and silver mining date back to the 1800s.
But the company has an uphill battle to get the state and county permits needed to move forward, given local concerns about environmental impacts and public opposition to extractive industries in Santa Fe County.
“Some communities in other places embrace these types of activities, and that’s great, but Santa Fe isn’t one of them,” said state Rep. Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe.
