The owner of a historic gold mine and mill near Mancos said his company did build an unpermitted gold mill and did use mercury without permission to refine gold, but he said it is not true that he created any environmental dangers or violated state mining regulations.
"We are very, very responsible environmentally," said Craig Liukko, president of the Red Arrow Gold Corp., which has owned and intermittently operated the Red Arrow Gold Mine since 1988.
But the Colorado Department of Natural Resources has notified Liukko of 11 possible violations at the mine and mill property — some serious and potentially dangerous enough for the state to shut down the operation on an emergency basis.
