However, the Pascua-Lama project has encountered serious obstacles including a lawsuit filed by indigenous communities in Chile who claim that project development work has harmed water supplies and damaged the glaciers that help feed local streams and rivers.
In May Chile’s environmental superintendent ordered all work on the project halted due to serious environment violations, and has levied a record fine of US$16 million on Barrick.
