Four defendants were sentenced on June 27 to three months in prison for illegally mining gold inside the country’s Corcovado National Park, officials said.
The men were taken into custody on June 20 when they were spotted mining for gold in a river within the park’s limits.
Carlos Madriz, the chief of control and protection at the Osa Conservation Area (ACOSA), said the miners caused about US$10,000 in damage to the river and surrounding ecosystem.
“This ruling helps control continuous environmental damage in Corcovado National Park because illegal gold mining keeps affecting valuable ecosystems within protected areas,” ACOSA said in a prepared statement.
