This video explores the problem of mercury pollution from small scale gold mining in Indonesia. Mercury is a persistent neuro-toxin that accumulates in the food chain, and is a hazard to human health. As in other countries where mercury is used to extract gold, the unregulated disposal of mercury-contaminated tailings is a major environmental problem. Shot on location in Mt Muro, Central Kalimantan, this film explores how mercury is released into the environment and how appropriate recycling technology can be applied to reduce the emissions at the source.
