Ghana: Western Region to combat illegal mining

The Western Regional Coordinating Council in collaboration with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is to embark on the operation.
This, the regional minister explained, was in response to the President’s directive to all security operatives to ensure that the activities of  illegal gold miners, popularly referred to as ‘Galamsey’, were stopped throughout the country.
He said one of the major problems confronting the region was illegal gold mining, which has led to the pollution of water bodies and killing of  living things in them, and also destroyed some forest reserves.
