Dr Heloo said the country was a party to the Stockholm Convention of Article 6 Section 1 (e), which states that “parties shall endeavour to develop appropriate strategies for identifying sites contaminated by chemicals; if remediation of those sites is undertaken, it shall be performed in an environmentally sound manner”.
She said this in Accra yesterday at a national meeting on contaminated sites assessment aimed at offering a unique opportunity to address contemporary pollution and contamination challenges facing the country.
The programme was in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation with the Blacksmith Institute from the United States of America under the ambit of the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution.
She said the problem of artisanal gold mining and galamsey with mercury had been high on the agenda of government, adding that it (mercury) had been reported in human blood, human urine and fish in the Birim North District.
