Even though Canada’s Barrick Gold Corporation was fined the highest amount that can be handed out by Chile’s environmental agency Superintendencia de Medio Ambiente (SMA) it’s still not enough for environmental and activist groups both in Chile and Canada.
Last week Barrick Gold, the world’s biggest gold company, was fined 8 billion pesos (approximately US$16 million) and its Pascua-Lama gold mine project stopped until the company deals with the issue of containing contaminated water.
