Still A Tragedy In Ghana – Waste Disposal in Ghana
In the Ashanti region, inhabitants have used the Lake Bosumtwi as dumping site to resolve their waste disposal problems. Aside from the “normal” everyday activity of dumping garbage in water bodies, another headache has to do with the “galamsey” or illegal mining issue. Pra and Densu Rivers are being poisoned due to ‘galamsey’ activities. Illegal miners or “galamseyers” process alluvial gold in the rivers that most mining communities use for domestic purposes. Apparently they use large amounts of Mercury when they process the gold in the rivers which seeps into the water that the inhabitants use everyday.
This poisoned water is ingested by people as it is used in cooking and they contract many diseases mentioned in the subsequent article.
