Nigeria: Promoting Health and Safety of Employees in the Workplace

Occupational diseases carry an enormous cost - for workers and their families, as well as for economic and social development of any country. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimates that occupational accidents and diseases result in an annual 4 percent loss in global gross domestic product (GDP), or about $2.8 trillion, in direct and indirect costs of injuries and diseases.....

Nigeria, as a key member of the ILO is expected to implement the provisions and conventions of the international labour body regarding the issue of safety and health of workers. However, this is not so as not much work have been done in this regard. A lot of issues regarding the use of chemicals and exposure to the environment which poses emerging risks to occupational health have not been addressed.
