Total, more than 200 different natural resource exploitation projects are currently being targeted by protesters, who complain about environmental damage and water pollution. In June, a confrontation at a $5 billion gold mine run by Newmont Mining Corp, a Colorado-based company, resulted in the death of one protester. The incident occurred three days after a different clash that twenty-one people injured and three dead.
On Twitter Marco Arana, a left-wing leader who formerly worked as Catholic priest, announced that “they detained me and beat me a lot, inside the police station they beat me again – punches in the face, the kidneys and insults.”
