Canadian Eldorado Gold Corporation has been issued an environmental certificate for its gold mining project at Certejul de Jos commune, but some environmental organisations are challenging the fact, claiming that the processing technology in use at Certej, which entails the utilisation of cyanides, is risky to the environment.
About the cyanide gold mining, Potocnik said that the decisions lie entirely with the member states who opt out to authorize the project or not, but on the other hand, there is a European legislation which must be observed, a legislation related to the impact-assessment on the environment.
