A stitch in time saves a miner


Mercury poisoning is increasingly being toe-tagged to the activity
of small-scale mining around the world. Most of the world’s
small and medium-sized gold operations usused concrete polishing machines for salee a mercury amalgamation
to extract gold from concentrates, says Mintek small-scale mining
division manager Dr Nellie Mutemeri.
She estimates that about four ounces of mercury are released for
every ounce of gold that is leached using a mercury amalgam. It is
thought that more than 1 000 t of mercury has been released over
the last 20 years in Brazil alone.
