An estimated “P180 million weekly gold mineral industry” is found along Iponan River, Baban said.
“The question is how much of that money is poured back to our local economy,” the statement read.
However, Bangon Kagay-an said the organization is not against mining per se.
“We recognize that our lives are partly enhanced by the end-products of mining. But the dangers of unabated mining are all too real -- pollution, flooding due to siltation, and diseases caused by mercury-poisoning,” the group said.
The group added that what it wants is a moratorium or a stop of all mining activities.
“We want to see Mother Nature able to breathe, to heal and preserve itself so that future generations can make use of its life-changing potentials,” the group said.
