After years of struggle, protest, and advocacy, indigenous communities in Guatemala, with the help of many allies, have succeeded in closing the Marlin gold mine in San Miguel Ixtahuacán, Guatemala. The Marlin gold mine, operated by the Canadian firm Goldcorp, has polluted Guatemalan rivers, destroyed venerated mountains, poisoned people living in its proximity, all while dividing communities. The company has even been implicated in the deaths of human rights activists.
