VOILENCE erupted at Manso Nsiana, a small farming community in the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region, yesterday morning, where some trigger-happy Chinese nationals operating illegal mining at the place, fired gun shots into a thick crowd.
Numbering about 20, the angry-looking Chinese, whose illegal mining activities are said to be destroying the environment, fired gunshots at the residents after the people, led by Nana Opia Mensah II, chief of the area, led them in protest against the galamsey operation.
Diseases such as buruli ulcer are rampant in communities in the Amansie West District of Ashanti and many believe that the pollution of river bodies, which are the source of drinking water for the people, by illegal miners who used dangerous chemicals to operate, was the cause of the disease.
