The WGC's conflict-free gold standard has various steps (see box) to ensure affected companies will be able to provide assurance of their sources to the next buyer in the chain.
Heymann agrees the standard could marginalise artisanal and small-scale miners, who may number as many as 10m-20m people. But illegal mining is a wider issue that needs to be addressed by governments and civil society.
