A SCOTUS Trickle-Down and the Poisoning of the Well

As we have mentioned more than one time lately, the Supreme Court on Monday glibly discarded Montana's 100-year old campaign-finance law forbidding corporate contributions, and did so on the basis of its egregious ruling in the Citizens United case. One of the little-reported effects of the latter abomination is the fact that it is going to affect our politics right down to the most local of local levels. The really terrible idea of having an elected judiciary is going to be transformed into a really terrible godawful idea. We are probably well on the way to a $10 million election for Register of Probate or County Commissioner. Or, to use an example more relevant to Monday's ruling, we may be on our way to cyanide in Montana's rivers and streams.
