The toxic tailings of this mine would be discharged into a huge 2700 hectare impoundment area. This doesn’t sound too bad unless you know that this impoundment area would require 3 dams to be built and a valley to be flooded, destroying the head waters of a fish bearing stream. This practice of flooding fish bearing streams into tailings ponds is an ugly practice that allows the mining companies and the federal government to escape the cost of cleaning up the aftermath of mining.
