The Illegal miners are also accused of dumping mercury solutions that are used in the process of mining in the fresh waters in the rivers close to where they mine. Mercury is a very toxic substance which should not be dispose off in an organism’s habitat. It is known to be poisonous to both man and animal. The act has caused the Ghana Govt more money in the provision of portable water as they have to use more chemicals because of the ever increasing mercury level in their waters.
I can go on and on but the fact still remains that in as much as we have to partner withe these foreigners to harness our natural resources there should also be a strict law as well as proper monitoring to ensure that Illegal mining is prevented.
